CBC.ca redesign drops Mac IE 5 support

Some of you may have noticed: CBC.ca launched a redesign this week. CBC is my home page and frankly, the jury is still out on what I think about the new design. Part of my resistance to it is just the human reluctance to change. Once I get beyond that, I'll be able to evaluate the design with less bias.

In the meantime, I did happen to notice that the site looks terrible in IE 5 on Mac. Last August, I posted my thoughts about abandoning support for IE 5 Mac. Since then, I've not supported it by default. I do my best to make a site functional in IE 5 Mac, and I can still fix 99% of the problems I run into with it, but I just don't stress about it or spend much time on it. When I wrote that post, I'd done some research into what other developers were saying about supporting IE 5 Mac and I found that the vast majority still thought it should be supported because alot of people still use it. I went the other direction, and now it seems that CBC.ca has as well.

What are your thoughts about supporting IE 5.x on Mac?

UPDATE: CBC.ca has posted a 10 year retrospective look at the changes to their website. My logs show that people from the CBC have been reading this post…
