Evaluating photo gallery apps, Part 3: Enhanced Simple Photo Gallery

I need to move on and tackle some other projects today, but I just did a quick install of Enhanced Simple Photo Gallery, a fork of Paul Griffin's original Simple Photo Gallery. I haven't spent much time with this one, but have formulated some quick opinions:

  • While image paths are obscured somewhat in the URL, images are still stored in the web root.
  • Poor documentation (1 README file) and no support forums.
  • No multiple uploads via admin interface (though you can FTP in bulk).
  • Interface is just OK, not really what I want to work with a daily basis.
  • Requires 777 permissions on the entire gallery folder.
  • Lastly, I can't get this app to display the images. I could tinker with it some more and probably get it working, but this isn't a pretty start to our relationship.

So far, I've looked at 3 applications, plus Gallery (G2): Plogger, zenphoto and Enhanced Simple Gallery. Of these three, Plogger certainly heads the pack, but G2 has a leg up on Plogger. Going on these early results, I'll probably upgrade my G1 sites to G2, and install Plogger on a test site and evaluate the project's growth and development.
