WAMP5 wocks!

Last night, I installed some development software on my new laptop, but rather than install Apache, PHP and MySQL manually as I've done in the past, I opted to use WAMP5. Wow, talk about easy! WAMP5 installed the aforementioned apps (as well as phpMyAdmin) in just a couple of clicks, and provides me with easy access to the configuration files from the system tray.

To demonstrate WAMP5's usefulness, here's a 5-minute guide to installing WAMP5, CodeIgniter and BambooInvoice:

  • Download WAMP5, double-click to install
  • Update the MySQL and phpMyAdmin configuration files with your MySQL password
  • Enable short tags in the PHP configuration file
  • Enable mod_rewrite in MySQL
  • Download BambooInvoice (CodeIgniter is included)
  • Unzip and copy contents to your development folder
  • Configure BambooInvoice as directed in the install file

Presto! In just 5 minutes, we have BambooInvoice and CodeIgniter running on a local installation of PHP, MySQL, Apache and phpMyAdmin. This is the perfect setup for coding in transit! What will your next subway app be?

Excellent. I didn't even know about WAMP5, and let's be honest, Bamboo is just about the coolest thing you could install first ;)

Thanks for your comment, Derek! I thought so too about Bamboo :)
